Bible Question:
I am asking, that to fully understand this question, you review post 79367. Does 2 Thess 1:8 (dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.) mean that we dont have to obey to be saved? In looking back to verse 7, what does it mean to have Jesus revealed in flaming fire dealing out retribution to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Sniper! May I intrude? :-) The word 'obey' has another nuance of meaning - that is to 'respond to' or 'listen to'. For instance, this word is used in Acts 12:13: "Peter knocked at the outer entrance, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer the door." In this instance, Rhoda responds to the calling of her name. I don't believe that 2 Thess. 1:8 supports works of obedience as being necessary for salvation. It is indicating that those who do not respond to the Gospel call will be judged. In Acts 15:7, Peter makes it clear that the Gospel is a message which must be responded to: "After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: 'Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.'" What is the Gospel? Paul answers this question in 1 Cor. 15:1-11, where he outlines the Gospel message: "Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. 9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them?yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. 11 Whether, then, it was I or they, this is what we preach, and this is what you believed." Notice that nothing is said in this passage about us 'doing' anything. For the Gospel is the message of God's grace, not our works. It is a message which must be believed, not another law which must be obeyed. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
