Bible Question:
Question - Does the following verse mention two separate groups of people or one? It speaks of: 1) "those who do not know God" 2) "those who do not obey the gospel" Is the first group of "those" unbelievers? And is the second group of "those" believers who do not obey the gospel? 2 Thessalonians 1:8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. (NASB) 2 Thessalonians 1:8 To deal out retribution (chastisement and vengeance) upon those who do not know or perceive or become acquainted with God, and [upon those] who ignore and refuse to obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Bible Answer: Greetings New Creature! Looking at this verse in the context of Paul's letter, we see that this retribution occurs at the Judgment. Yes, I believe that these are two groups of individuals, but they are both "dead" spiritually. The first group is being judged because they "knew not God." (Check out Romans 1 - no one has an excuse!) The second group is being judged because they did not obey the Gospel. They rejected Jesus. Obedience to the Gospel of Jesus is BELIEF! This is love for God: that we obey His commands, and His command is to believe in Jesus (Read 1 John for a thorough discussion of this!) Believers who do not live lifes that reflect Jesus receive DISCIPLINE from the Lord, not judgment! (Romans 8:1 declares that there is no condemnation for those who are IN Christ Jesus!) This is not to excuse carnal living, but should serve as a reminder, that believers will one day stand before Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who suffered death for us, and give a "report" to Him for how we CHOSE to live, either for Him or for ourselves. (2 Cor 5:10) We are warned to live holy lives so that we will not be ashamed at His coming!(Eph 4:1; 1 Peter 1:15-16; et al)) Can you imagine being engaged in a sinful activity when Jesus' returns? (How about this senario? The trupmet sounds and you are in the middle of a family fued or marital argument! Wouldn't you rather be "caught" living a lifestyle that Jesus exemplified?) Since we do not know the day or the hour, we should always endeavor to live our lives in such a way that is pleasing to Him! (Sobering, isn't this?!) Hope this helps! May God bless you as you search His Word! Mommapbs |
