NASB | 1 Thessalonians 5:23 ¶ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Thessalonians 5:23 ¶ Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you through and through [that is, separate you from profane and vulgar things, make you pure and whole and undamaged--consecrated to Him--set apart for His purpose]; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept complete and [be found] blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Bible Question: Are there scriptures that define the three parts: spirit, soul and body? Are we considered as triune beings? The mind of the spirit - is that another dimension of the spirit? |
Bible Answer: I'll take a shot at these questions but I must admit, I don't think they'll do justice in accordance with God's Word. All I can think of is the fact that we do have three distinct areas of our being as mentioned by Jesus Himself in Mark 12:30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. Now I said three distinct areas in contrast to the four above but that's because most consider the heart of a man to be his mind. But these 3 distinct areas of a human being doesn't even come close to the triune nature of the Godhead. That's why I'm not associating the word with us humans. In my mind it's simply NOT done as it would be disrespectful but that's my opinion. We as Bible students need to remember our body is merely a temporary arrangement as depicted by Paul in 2 Cor 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Further, we're also told that God created us in THEIR Image. What qualities do we share with the Godhead? Apparently, we have to assume that is our spirit and soul which will live on forever after the destruction of this world in the hereafter. It's our choice as to whether we live with God forever or die forever with Satan and his demons. Well as indicated, I have reached the end of my paultry knowledge on this subject so I'll let someone else give their response to this great question. |
