Bible Question:
Goodmorning, brethren, Could someone help me understand better the difference between soul and spirit? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Bubbly! The Ryrie Expanded Edition Study Bible goes into detail a little on the division of spirit and soul based on two verses: 1 Thessalonians 5:23 and Hebrews 4:12.. "5:23-24 spirit and soul and body should not be understood as defining the parts of man, but as representing the whole man." (1 Thess. 5:23) "4:12 the word of God. Here meaning His inspired Word, the Scriptures. living and active. It has the power to reach to the inmost parts of one’s personality and to judge the innermost thoughts. soul and spirit. The meaning is that the Word pierces to the depths of soul and spirit, not between the two. They stand for the innermost facets of our immaterial nature, just as joints and marrow the material aspect. Both soul and spirit can be involved in what pleases or displeases God. (For soul, see Mark 12:30 and 1 Peter 2:11; for spirit, see 1 Cor. 2:11 and 2 Cor. 7:1). Also see note on 1 Thess. 5:23-24." (Hebrews 4:12) Also Nelson's Study Bible had an interesting study on the word "spirit".. "(Gk. pneuma) (5:23; Luke 8:55; 1 Cor. 5:5) Strong’s G4151; soul (Gk. psuche) (5:23; Eph. 6:6; Phil. 1:27) Strong’s G5590; body (Gk. soma) (5:23; Matt. 6:22; Heb. 4:12) G4983: This is the only place in the New Testament where the tripartite being of a person is implied. Yet in this passage, all three constitute a person in his or her entirety. The spirit enables a person to contact the divine Spirit and is that part of a person that the Spirit quickens at the time of regeneration (John 3:6; Rom. 8:16). The Greek word 'psuche' translated soul, means “life.” The New Testament writers use this word to speak of a person’s personality or inward, animating essence. Finally the New Testament writers identify the body, a person’s physical being, as separate from one’s soul or spirit. As this verse indicates, God works from the inside out, sanctifying our entire being so that we can live with Him forever." The NIV New Scofield Bible puts it this way.. "Spirit Although the words “soul” and “spirit” are sometimes used interchangeably in Scripture when referring to man (Job 7:11; 1 Cor 5:5; Heb 10:39), a distinction is observed in some passages. They are declared to be divisible (Heb 4:12) and are distinguished when used in reference to the burial and resurrection of the human body. The body is buried a natural body (Gk. 'soma psuchikon' —soul-body) but raised a spiritual body (Gk. 'soma pneumatikon') (1 Cor 15:44). The difference between the two terms seems to be that the spirit is that which “knows” (1 Cor 2:11) and is capable of God-consciousness and communication with God (Job 32:8; Prov 20:27; cp. Ps 18:28), whereas the soul is the seat of the affections, desires, emotions, and the will of man (Mat 11:29; 26:38; John 12:27). The N.T. word for soul (Gk. ) corresponds to the O.T. soul (Heb ; e.g. Deu 6:5; 14:26; 1 Sam 18:1; 20:4, 17; Job. 14:22; Ps 42:6; 84:2), whereas the N.T. word for spirit (Gk. 'psuche') is the same in meaning as the O.T. word for spirit (Heb 'ruach'; e.g. Gen 41:8; 1 Cor 5:5). See Gen 1:26, note." I hope that this helps! Blessings to you, Makarios |
