Subject: KJV Only Controversy |
Bible Note: kalos, the book John MacArthur mentioned, "The King James Version Debate" by D. A. Carson is a good one. I have it my library, have read it, and recommend it to anyone of inquiring mind who would like to become better informed on what the KJV controversy is all about. I've always thought the KJV Only enthusiasts walked on shaky ground, and after reading this well-researched and documented book by Dr. Carson, I'm convinced of it. But the book will probably render little service to the KJV Only crowd. Based on what I have learned about their thought processes that led them take so ridiculous a position regarding the sanctity of the KJV, not even a nuclear blast, let alone a mere book by a respected scholar, would be able to jar them out of their cave. Dr. Carson cited only one valid and perspicuous reason for clinging to the KJV: personal liking for and familiarity with its Elizabethan English. That's the only reason I read it on occasion. For me, total abandoment of the familiar old cadence of the King James would be like forsaking an old friend. But I think it ludicrous to believe that it is any more divinely inspired than any other translation into English or any other language. --Hank |
