NASB | 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench the Spirit; |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not quench [subdue, or be unresponsive to the working and guidance of] the [Holy] Spirit. |
Bible Question: What is the difference between quenching the Holy Spirit and being Convicted? |
Bible Answer: Literal translation of "quench" is to "suppress". We shut down the flow of the Holy Spirit by ignorance, or by design. There is so much He wants to do in us, but we limit Him through our own unbelief, or religious practice. The issue of conviction is quite different than form what the author of Thessalonians was pointing out. I think a look at Romans 8:13 provides good insight. "But if by the spirit you put to death the deeds of the body.." The Holy Spirit will show you where you missed God's standard, and will also enable you to conquer that area so that you (or I) am no longer in bondage to it. |
