Subject: Paul refers to mystery of Christ |
Bible Note: hi Rosiedog, Paul never visited Colosse before, a small town in the province of Asia. The Colossians church was a fruit of its three years of ministry in Ephesus. The scholars think that Paul wrote this letter during his first imprisonment in Rome, taking Tychicus the epistles to the Colossians, Philemon, and the Ephesus, to its respective destinies. The intention of this epistle was because at some time of the imprisonment of Pablo, Epaphras asked for aid to him to deal with a false doctrine that threatened the Colosse church. So it seems that this heresy was a mixture of pagan occultism, Jewish legalism and Christianity. Their errors remember one old form of Gnosticism, which taught that Jesus was not totally God nor man, but one of the semi divine beings that served of bridge to save the existing abyss between God and the world. Therefore, it said that Christ had no authority and capacity to satisfy the necessities with the colossians. Illuminated believers, nevertheless, could reach the spiritual fullness by means of special knowledge and a rigorous self-discipline. Impelled by the urgency to repatriate to Colossians the Onesimus slave, and to give it to its master, Paul wrote this letter with a quadruple intention: 1 - to report and to refute heresy 2 - to instruct to the Colossians in the truth and to alert them of the dangers to return to pagan vices 3 - to express its personal interest by the believers, and 4 - to urge them to foment the mutual harmony and the love. I hope this also helps! in Christ, Jesus777 |
