Bible Question: Leaving a church that has just introduced false doctrine. Is there any sin that a person needs to confess because they have been in such a church? |
Bible Answer: Hi, His daughter... Welcome to the forum! Even the purist churches on earth are a mixture of wheat and tares, along with a mixture of truth and error (Matthew 13:30; 1 Corinthians 5:1-13; Revelation 2:1-3:22). If the error is such that it is contrary to essential doctrine (i.e., the authority of Scripture, the nature of the Trinity, the deity of Christ, the truth of the Gospel, etc.) then it is probably a place that we ought not join into fellowship. It is our responsibility to keep the church as pure as possible. That means that we must find a congregation with whom we can submit and serve. Is there sin in having attended such a church? All error is sin. We are all subject to embracing error. Moving from darkness to light is a process that uncovers error. We should confess that error to Christ, for which sin He died. Is there sin in leaving such a church? No, I do not think so. However, we have to be careful that we do not leave with an improper attitude or with improper motives. Church hopping is a serious modern problem. Would you be able to explain the issues at the church a little more clearly? In Him, Doc PS I believe the essential doctrines of the church are summed up fairly well by the first seven ecumenical councils: First Council of Nicaea, First Council of Constantinople, Council of Ephesus, Council of Chalcedon, Second Council of Constantinople, Third Council of Constantinople, and Council of Hieria. |
