While Manassah was actually the firstborn child(Gen 41:50-52), Jeremiah 31:9, says "Ephraim is My firstborn (beko in Hebrew)". So it doesn't always mean first in time. Ephraim took priority over Manassah and the rights of the one being born first. Colossians 1:15 fits this since Jesus wasn't the one who was born first in time ... some animal was ...
