Subject: Paul Advocating Moderation |
Bible Note: Greetings George! This is going to sound like I'm being a smart alex, but I'm really not. The reason the word 'moderation' was translated 'gentle spirit' in some versions is because the word 'moderation' is not used in the Greek. :-) Here is what I mean! Our English words are only translations of the orginal words. Some translations are better than others. Some are fine when they are made, but later information leads to a better understanding of how a word should be translated. In the case of the KJV, I'm not sure why they ever translated the word 'epieikes' as 'moderation'. The word is used 5 times in the New Testament. The KJV translates it three times as 'gentle', once as 'patient', and once as 'moderation'. The best definition seems to be 'gentle'. This word is used in connection with words in 1 Tim. 3:3 and Titus 3:2 which have to do with violence and a lack of violence. Translation can be a tricky business at times! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
