Bible Question: Adultery is the grounds given by Jesus for a divorce. But what do i do if my spouse verbally and physically abuses me every night? What do i do after prayer and marriage counselling does'nt seem to work? |
Bible Answer: Dear humility, I pray that what you have described is not your own situation and the question is only a bible study one. Nevertheless, I hope the below scriptures are helpful:- Mal 2:16 "For I hate divorce," says the LORD, the God of Israel, "and him who covers his garment with wrong," says the LORD of hosts. "So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously." Matt 18:15 "If your brother sins, go and show him his fault in private; if he listens to you, you have won your brother. Matt 18:16 "But if he does not listen to you, take one or two more with you, so that BY THE MOUTH OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES EVERY FACT MAY BE CONFIRMED. Matt 18:17 "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 1 Cor 7:4 The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 1 Cor 7:5 Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. God surely hates violence against a spouse and divoce. If the spouse is a believer, appeal it to your pastor as per teaching in Mat 18:15-17. If it still cannot be settled, as Keliy suggested, a temporary separation for protecting oneself from being brutally hurt is reasonable. Don't forget to pray for everybody involved unceasingly.
