Subject: Sun-Judged Christians! |
Bible Note: Greetings All! Paul prayed for the Philippian Christians that their love might abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight (Phil. 1:9), so that they might able to discern what is best and that they might be pure and blameless until the day of Christ (Phil. 1:10). The Greek word 'heilikrines' translated as 'pure' in v. 10 is an interesting word. It is formed from two Greek words - 'heile' which means 'light of the sun' and 'krino' which means 'to judge'. The New Bible Knowledge Commentary says, "Some pottery salesmen would use wax to cover cracks and weak places in pottery. Such a cover-up could be detected only by holding the jug up to the sun to see if any weaknesses were visible. Such a vase was 'sun-judged'" So, Paul wanted Christians to be 'sun-judged' - believers whose lives would stand up under close inspection. The English word 'sincere' is based upon two Latin words 'sine sera' that literally mean 'without wax'. How do we measure up? Are we sincere in our faith? Are we able to stand up under close scrutiny? Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
