Bible Question: what is the gift of descerning spirits? |
Bible Answer: Hi Grenee, Here is the referrence: 1 Cor 12:10 "...and to another, workings of powers, and to another, prophecy, and to another, discerning of spirits, and to another, kinds of languages, and to another, interpretation of languages." Discerning is from the Greek "diakrisis", meaning estimating, judging, discerning, distinguishing. It is used in Hebrews 5:14 "But solid food is for those full grown, having exercised the faculties through habit, for 'distinction' of both good and bad." And in Romans 14:1 "But him that is weak in faith receive ye, yet not for 'decision' of scruples." Robertsons says this: "A most needed gift to tell whether the gifts were really of the Holy Spirit and supernatural (cf. so-called “gifts” today) or merely strange though natural or even diabolical." And Vincent: "Rev., correctly, discernings. Distinguishing between the different prophetic utterances, whether they proceed from true or false spirits." I understand this gift to be referring to the supernatural ability to be able to distinguish what kind of spirit one is dealing with, whether it be of God or not. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
