Bible Question: In a Bible discussion last night, a lady at our church said she didn't see anything wrong with teaching children to believe in Santa Clause. She thinks that it is harmless fun. I know this isn't the Christmas season, but I am interested to know how members of the forum would address this practice of including Santa Clause in the teaching of the birth of Christ during the Christmas season. What do you tell your children when asked about Santa Clause? I look foward to your response? Thank you for your time. JAL |
Bible Answer: Hi, JAL! I think the problem lies in that we (society) do not concern ourselves with teaching about Christ as we do about fables... Our culture is capitalistic: everything is about money... have you noticed how even runaways and the homeless are portrayed wearing designer clothes (these spanking-new), the latest hair styles, and never missing a step with the culture (music, language, entertainment)... the fable of St. Nicholas traveling world-wide to bring the gifts for the "nice" kids was a wonderful design... sadly it has been corrupted to the point that parents over indulge their children with expensive and copious gifts... all this while Christ is removed from sight... It is almost as if Christ is becoming the world's favorite taboo! I do not see a real problem with keeping a tradition alive, as long as we do not neutralize Christ in the process! But there are more sinister traditions that we, as Christians, should be concerned with... the tradition of separation of Church and state (the Founding Fathers were establishing a means to keep the Church from being exploited; today, we find the Church being assaulted in the name of this tradition); we have the colorful tradition of witches hallowed, which celebrates witches, warlocks, monsters, spiritual beings and demons... a tradition that calls on children to incorporate themselves in a world of violence, chaos, and the supernatural... then there's hollow wood's traditions of twisting Christ into nothingness and revering all that is evil... children, through cartoons, videos, video games, and "just for kids" programs are trained to be disobedient, apathetic, and egocentric; Christ is presented as primitive notion held onto by old fashioned fanatics bent on keeping people from enjoying themselves... Santa Claus, or anything else, should not be allow to replace Christ in any form or function... but as long as we (Christendom) eagerly accept society's principles the resonance in Christ's query will continue to gain momentum, exponentially: …However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?" (Luke 18:8) God Bless! Angel |
