Subject: What sort of oil? |
Bible Note: Did anyone watch the national news last night? This verse was quoted by a "born again" representative of the Zion Oil company. Having just been awarded the "Asher Permit" by the Israeli government, he said this verse provides proof that enough oil to eliminate the country's dependence on foreign oil is present in this region. But is crude oil what is spoken of here? Prior to entry into Canaan, Moses’ prophetic blessing again predicted a prosperous portion for Asher. The tribe was figuratively to ‘dip its foot in oil.’ (De 33:24, 25; compare Job 29:6.) Their allotment of territory stretched along the Mediterranean coastal plains from below the town of Dor, S of Mount Carmel, on up to the N boundary of Palestine at Sidon. (Jos 17:7-11; 19:24-31) This included some of the most fertile land in all Israel, where olive trees would provide abundant oil, while other fruits would provide dainties fit to grace a royal table. (Ge 49:20; De 33:24) When olive oil can be used to fuel cars, I suppose this verse could fulfill this person's goal. With this fundamental misunderstanding, I wonder if they're even going to drill in the correct area? Let's not even get into whether or not the fleshly nation of Israel is still God's chosen people. |
