Bible Question: Why, in John 1:25, do they associate John's authority to Baptize with the Christ, the Prophet, or Elijah? Is there Old Testament scripture that speaks of this? Or historical information that indicates that only the Christ, Prophet, or Elijah had such authority? |
Bible Answer: Motherphilo Among the Jews, Moses and Elijah were considered the two great prophets. Moses is referred to as "the Prophet." But based on Deut 18:15 and following the Jews of Jesus' day expected the Messiah to be a great prohet on the same level as Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and Prophecy. You can see many places in the Gospels, especially Matthew and John, but especially in Matthew where the actions of Jesus are parrallel to the actions and events in the live of Moses (death as birth sought by a king, exile, teaching God's revelation on a mountain , etc.)and Jesus' miracles surpassed even the miracles of Elijah. But Jesus himself indicated that John, repesenting Prophecy, had come in the spirit of Elijah (Matt 11:14; 17:11f; Mark 19:12f, although some thought Jesus was Elijah returmed (Matt 16:14 and elswhere). Moses and Elijah representing the Law and the Prohets are witnesses to the glorification of Jesus in the Transfiguration on a mountain just as Moses and Elijah experienced God on Sinai and Horeb. As for the connection with baptism think of the typology of the crossing of the Red sea with baptism as a parallel between Moses and Jesus. Emmaus |
