Bible Answer: Dear Mae, I became familiar with the "signs" when I lived for a number of years in the mountains of North Carolina. The people there would get calendars from the feed store that showed all kinds of things -- I never actually learned how to read them. Folks in those parts would do all of their planting by the signs, and other activities as well. They would assure me that if you jarred cucumbers "when the signs were in the bowels" then they wouldn't pickle. I also recall a mother refusing to allow her child to receive an operation on a particular day because the "signs were not good." People there assured me, as well, that it was based on Genesis 1:14. What's more, these folks will tell you that it all "really works!" From what I understand, the majority of these signs appear to be rooted in some kind of superstition. They even seem to be related to astrology. I've never had the interest to actually research their origins. But, it is a far stretch to associate when to make pickles and when to have operations with Genesis 1:14! The passage is talking about the signs of hours, days, seasons, etc. So they are getting a huge amount of mileage from a verse that simply won't bear that weight! (That's a common practice -- for example the Mormons build a whole practice on a single peculiar phrase 1 Corinthians 15:29.) Furthermore, Scripture explicitly forbids God's people from the reading of omens and signs. Finally, let me briefly mention that just because something works doesn't mean that it is the right thing to do. That is called pragmaticism. The primary authority for the life of the Christian is not whether something works or not. Our primary authority is the Word of God. We obey the Word first and foremost. Questions of practicality and usefulness are much farther down our list of priorities. Our lives are about honoring a Holy God, not finding things that work to our benefit. I hope that helps, ma'am.
