Bible Question: Gen. 19:1 ..."Lot was sitting in the gateway of the city." Can anyone tell me the indication of Lot's position? Debbie Url |
Bible Answer: Hi, Debbie... Eastern peoples used the city gates as the place where business, government, and judicial decisions were made. The term "gates" eventually came to be used as a term to describe the place of authority for a city or nation. Based on the verse you have cited, we know that Lot had become a person of some influence in the city of Sodom. This does not mean that he was necessarily involved in the immorality of that wicked city, although Peter tells us that his soul was "vexed" by being exposed so regularly to their thinking (see 2 Peter 2:7-8).
