NASB | Deuteronomy 14:7 "Nevertheless, you are not to eat of these among those which chew the cud, or among those that divide the hoof in two: the camel and the rabbit and the shaphan, for though they chew the cud, they do not divide the hoof; they are unclean for you. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Deuteronomy 14:7 "However, you are not to eat any of these [animals] among those which chew the cud, or among those that divide the hoof in two: the camel, the hare and the shaphan, for though they chew the cud, they do not split the hoof; they are unclean for you. |
Bible Question: why did the updated change rock-badger (nasb1977) to shaphan? I thought the update was suppose to be easier to understand? |
Bible Answer: Greetings Donald Duck, This is an interesting word 'shaphan' (shaw-fawn' From H8226; a species of rock rabbit (from its hiding), that is, probably the hyrax: - coney.) (1) Interestingly enough, the NASB update puts the actual Hebrew word in the text, rather than using.. "rock-badger" - NAS77,RSV,NAB,REB,ESV,NRSV,MKJV, "coney" - NIV,KJV,ASV,NJB,Amplified, "rock hyrax" - NKJV, "cherogril" - Douay-Rheims, "rabbit" - YLT The textual footnote to the NAS95 states, "[4] A small, shy, furry animal (Hyrax syriacus) found in the peninsula of the Sinai, northern Israel, and the region round the Dead Sea; KJV coney, orig NASB rock-badger".. The NAS95 rendering is truly 'unique' compared to other translations. I, like you, would rather that they left Deut. 14:7 alone. Blessings to you, Makarios |
