Bible Question: The word "Honor" seems to have many meanings in our world today in regards to our parents. As we face, as Christians, the task of Honoring our father and mother in their old age. Question, to what extent do we go to make sure we do what is right in God's eyes when our parents get older? What does the word Honor mean? |
Bible Answer: Greetings amijares! The word "honor" has a lot to do with respect. However, honor is not only a description of how others should treat you in life (which is respect), but honor is also a description of how you are viewed by the whole of society. There are those who would do anything to save their honor! So as you can see: "honor" means a great deal more than just "respect", and it has a lot to do with how a person is viewed and how a person attains honor. So as you can see, honor and integrity and respect all go hand in hand. A matter of honor in Exodus 20:12 speaks of children honoring their parents. Children should never disgrace their parents by giving them a "bad" name, thus insulting their honor, by not living or exceeding the Godly expectations that the parents have for their children. However, it is also written, "a father must not put his son to the test.." Therefore, a parent's honor is that much greater if they have children who choose to honor and respect them rather than to have to frighten them in order to win their respect. But of course, we also know that "we all respected our fathers who disciplined us.." But the attainment of honor is much more than just giving discipline, and it is something that only God can bestow, because honor is bestowed to those who live righteously in life. By sending us His own Son, He honored Himself through His Son, and He gave us the highest honor possible by allowing us a way to become spiritually filled with Him, forever saving us from disgrace! So the Lord has protected the honor of His bride by coming to die for us and then by His resurrection. Keep following the Lord, no matter what anyone says, and you will have honor! Turn away from sin and do not be swayed by public opinion, and you will have both honor and respect. Believe in Jesus Christ with all of your heart, mind and soul, and you will not only have honor, since He will even mention your name before the Father, but you will always have respect, and eternal life! Blessings to you, Nolan |
