Bible Question: Hi, can I get a breakdown or opinions maybe on Ephesians 6:14, particularly about the second half of that verse, having on the breastplate of righteousness! Im not looking for any particular answers, just some comments-thanks |
Bible Answer: Greetings Pray4me2009, Concerning the 'breastplate of righteousness,' here are some related verses: Isaiah 59:17, 1 Thess. 5:8. The Amplified Bible says, "..the breastplate of integrity and of moral rectitude and right standing with God." And here is some commentary: "6:14 Verses 14-17 present the six pieces of spiritual armor. ... The breastplate of Roman times went completely around the body, so that the back of a warrior was also protected. The breastplate was made of hard leather or metal. .." (1) "6:14 ... Righteousness practiced by the believer to protect the chest and heart from Satan." (2) "6:14 ... the breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate was usually a tough, sleeveless piece of leather or heavy material with animal horn or hoof pieces sewn on, covering the soldier's full torso, protecting his heart and other vital organs. Because righteousness, or holiness, is such a distinctive characteristic of God Himself, it is not hard to understand why that is the Christian's chief protection against Satan and his schemes. As believers faithfully live in obedience to and communion with Jesus Christ, His own righteousness produces in them the practical, daily righteousness that becomes their spiritual breastplate. Lack of holiness, on the other hand, leaves them vulnerable to the great enemy of their souls (cf. Is. 59:17; 2 Cor. 7:1; 1 Thess. 5:8)."
