NASB | Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above--spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us]. [Rom 1:20] |
Bible Question: I know its been debated for years but can someone explain to me ,in simple terms, the apparent contradiction between James 2:24 and Ephesians 2:8..Are we in fact saved by grace or must there be works involved in our SALVATION...Is our salvation in anyway shape or form dependent upon works...Thanks... |
Bible Answer: Hello, Shortstop. I'll submit a relatively short answer and direct you to Search for more discussion upon this topic. There is no contradiction between James 2:24 and Ephesians 2:8. Man is saved by God's grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone.... James sees two kinds of faith, saving faith and professing faith. For Paul, justification is by faith [Rom.4:5]. For James, justification is by faith that works -- a genuine faith that manifests itself in post-conversion works. Before salvation, these Jews had believed in the efficacy of works. Now some were reacting at the opposite extreme, imagining that works play no part in the salvation experience. James retorts that the kind of faith that does not produce works is not saving faith. John Calvin said, "Faith alone saves, but a faith that saves is never alone." Thus James' question is not simply, "Can faith save?" but as the Greek text may suggest, "Can THAT (kind of) faith save?" Can merely professed but undemonstrated faith save? (see verses 21-24).... Now go back to Ephesians 2:8 and continue reading verses 9 and 10. In v.10, Paul continues his argument with these words: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus, FOR GOOD WORKS, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them." So Paul and James are talking about the same things, teaching the same doctrine. The New Testament never teaches, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer pointed out, "cheap grace." "Dead" faith -- the kind James had in mind, that does not exhibit itself in changed lives, in works, is indeed "dead." --Hank |
