AMPLIFIED 2015 | Ephesians 1:18 And [I pray] that the eyes of your heart [the very center and core of your being] may be enlightened [flooded with light by the Holy Spirit], so that you will know and cherish the hope [the divine guarantee, the confident expectation] to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints (God's people), |
Bible Question:
I'm studying Ephesians chapter 1 and wondering if anyone can shed some light on the end of verse 18. Paul is praying for the eyes of our heart to be enlightened, that we may know the hope of his calling, what are the riches of the glory of HIS inheritance in the saints. When I first read it I felt it was talking about the hope we have in Christ resulting in eternal life. I also as I read thought Paul was talking about our inheritance, but by reading it closer, I note that it really says of "His inheritance in the saints." How do I interpret this verse? Is God saying that we are his inheritance? That he counts a relationship with us to be so valuable, that the end of our own hope brings us eternal joy with him and the same is true of God. Our obedience to God brings him eternal joy to inherit us as His own? Not sure if I'm making sense as I type this, but am I right to interpret this verse to say God considers those who are believers in Christ to be an inheritance all his own? Any insight would be appreciated. In Christ, Tealead |
Bible Answer: Hi Tealead, You have mail from ChadK. I think that your reflections are good; but I do not think that Ephesians 1:18 is saying that. The list of things are things that are given to the church and are things with which He fills us. Verse 13: We are given the down payment or pledge of our inheritance; the holy spirit. With a view of being redeemed by God, to the praise of His glory. Verse 17: We are given a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of Him. Verse 18: We are given knowledge of what to hope for. Verse 18: We are given knowledge of His glorious riches. Verse 19: We are given knowledge of His greatness and power. Verse 20: These things are in accordance with His might. Verse 22: All things were put under His feet, and He was given as Head over all things to the church. I think that that is speaking of the Holy Spirit. Verse 23: We are His body, the fullness of Him who fills us with all these things. The Holy Spirit fills us with the holy spirit. That is how I see it. From the heart, Ray |
