Bible Question: Galatians 6:3; "For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself." Can anyone shed any explanation on this? |
Bible Answer: Hi, John... This admonition by Paul falls within the context of ministry to others in their spiritual failings (vv1-2). As Robert Jamieson puts it very simply, "Self-conceit, the chief hindrance to forbearance and sympathy towards our fellow men, must be laid aside." In verse 3, Paul helps us in our self-conceit by the rightful assertion that we are nothing nor do we have anything of our own in which to glory. Indeed, we are everything except good (Romans 3:10-18). Consequently, self-conceit is self-deception. A recognition of our own low estate, enables us to help others in a humble and gentle fashion. It allows us to recognize that we are capable of falling in the same or similar way in which we observe others fall (v1b) -- which awareness enables us to avoid additional sin (Proverbs 1:17). The most loving thing we can do for one another is to use the Word to admonish, correct, and enlighten one another. Solomon said that the the wounds from a friend are better than the kisses of an enemy (Proverbs 27:6; Ecclesiastes 7:5). A wise man loves rebuke (Proverbs 9:8b), but the fool will not listen (Proverbs 13:1b). One of the wonderful things about Christianity is that it carefully and intentionally embraces the truth. It searches it out. It does not claim something that is not true. It rejoices and thrives in the truth. Notice how in our day and age, many para-church organizations find themselves with leaders that claim to have some sort of "special anointing." Nevertheless, over time, the truth always comes out. The real character of those leaders is made manifest in their immorality and rebellion (Titus 1:15-16). In Him, Doc |
