Bible Question: When receiving the Holy Spirit is it necessary to speak in toungs |
Bible Answer: Hi, Les... Welcome to the forum! The Holy Spirit is a gift for the believer received upon regeneration. God dwelling in us! The changes in a person are so radical, that the Bible speaks of him becoming a new creature (2 Corinthians 5:17). Every internal change has external evidences. However, they go far beyond something as trivial as something like "speaking in tongues". The fundamental evidence of the Holy Spirit is Christ-like fruit (Galatians 5:22-23). Here is a list -- certainly not an exhaustive one -- of things that the Holy Spirit manifests in the believer: 1. Hatred and Sorrow over Sin I read once that sin is spelled with "I" in the middle -- it is very self focused. The Holy Spirit works in us a knowledge and deep sorrow for sin. This is the kind of sorrow that is accompanied by repentance (2 Corinthians 7:10), a turning, and an abhorring of sin. In the past, a desire to be delivered from these sins did not seem great, but now we see them in God's eyes. "Then I said, 'Woe is me, for I am ruined! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I live among a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.'" (Isaiah 6:5) "But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus' feet, saying, 'Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!'" (Luke 5:8) "For I know my transgressions, And my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, I have sinned And done what is evil in Your sight, So that You are justified when You speak And blameless when You judge. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, And in sin my mother conceived me." (Psalm 51:3-5) 2. Sole Source of Hope Along with the knowledge of sin, there is a knowledge that it is Jesus Christ who alone can take away and deliver one from their sin. It is knowledge that it is only Jesus and His finished work on the cross that can remove sins. Not our works, not our own will, not the works of any other person, nor declaration of a church or a priest, none of these things effect our standing before a Holy God. "Nothing but the blood of Jesus." He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (2 Corinthians 5:21) 3. Desire to Live a Holy Life The life of a believer is characterized by a desire for holiness. We acknowledge that there is still much sin in us, but we now desire to put these things off, and live gratefully unto our God to His glory. rethren, I do not regard myself as having laid hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philipians 3:13-14) 4. Fruitfulness A believer lives a fruitful life; a life filled with good works. These works do not serve any function to bring about righteousness nor do they play a part in our salvation. However, their presence demonstrates that we belong to and abide in Christ. My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples. (John 15:8) ...who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. (Titus 2:14) 5. Love of the Word He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will disclose Myself to him. (John 14:21) So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. But you did not learn Christ in this way, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus. (Ephesians 4:17-21) 7. Love of the Saints We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love abides in death. (1 John 3:14) "This is My commandment, that you love one another, just as I have loved you." (John 15:12) In Him, Doc |
