Bible Question:
Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. **Please explain this phrase!" |
Bible Answer: In context you can see that he doesn't view circumcision itself as meaning anything. The usual intent of chosing to be circumcised would be to follow the law which is impossible for us to do so we can't be justified by following the law. Paul himself circumcised Timothy and possibly Titus. Acts 16:1 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. And a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek, Acts 16:2 and he was well spoken of by the brethren who were in Lystra and Iconium. Acts 16:3 Paul wanted this man to go with him; and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. Gal 2:3 But not even Titus, who was with me, though he was a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. Gal 2:4 But it was because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. Gal 5:1 It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery. Gal 5:2 Behold I, Paul, say to you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. Gal 5:3 And I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is under obligation to keep the whole Law. Gal 5:4 You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. Gal 5:5 For we through the Spirit, by faith, are waiting for the hope of righteousness. Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love. |
