Bible Question:
What is 'a yoke of slavery?' What is the freedom that we should stand firm in? Please use scripture to support your answer. |
Bible Answer: Dear Bill Mc, Here is some interesting information that may help you determine what this "yoke" is.. "On the “yoke” see comment on Acts 15:10." ... "Here Peter may refer to the common Jewish tradition of the “yoke” of God’s *law or his *kingdom as opposed to the yoke of worldly care. Most Jewish people saw the law not as a burden but as a gracious gift; they believed that its duties freed them from real burdens (cf. Mt 11:29-30). If he refers here to the law, Peter may think of its inadequacy only in the sense found in Jeremiah 31:32: the fathers broke it, but under the new covenant God would write the law in their hearts (Jer 31:33-34). Later *rabbis sometimes offered more lenient rulings for the sake of the majority of their people, who could not live by the stricter ones." (IVP Bible Background Commentary: NT) "Yoke" refers to the apparatus used to control a domesticated animal. The Jews referred to the "yoke of the law" as a good thing, the essence of true religion. Paul argued that for those who pursued it as a way of salvation, the law was a yoke of slavery." The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible --Nolan |
