Bible Question: help me to understand what Paul was saying in Galatians 4:1-11 |
Bible Answer: Greetings Ladonnab! Allow me to attempt to answer your question. The church at Galatia was being subjected to the false teachings of a group known as Judaizers. Basically, they taught that one had to obey the Law of Moses and be 'Jewish' in lifestyle and custom in order to be saved. Paul consistently taught against them. He stressed throughout Galatians that we are saved by grace, not by obedience to the Law. In Gal. 4:1-11, he is contrasting the rights and priveleges Christians have under grace as God's sons, with the slavery of the law. At one time, they were under the rule of the Law. While they were, they were no better than slaves, having no part in God's kingdom and no rights. But now, through grace, they have been made sons of God and heirs of the kingdom. So, Paul asks, why would they want to go back to the old system of slavery and leave the rights and priveleges that they now have? This is what following the teachings of the Judaizers would have meant doing. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
