Bible Question: What constitutes sound doctrine? How does one know if they are inline with historic, orthodox Biblical teaching? |
Bible Answer: Hi, BradK! This is not a new issue... Paul addressed this problem in Galatians 1:6-24. There is but One Gospel! The problem we find is the myriad of interpretations. We are not to fear the Bible! We are to be cautious of man's interpretation and doctrines! "How does one know if they are inline with historic, orthodox Biblical teaching? " As far as history... every decade or so a new generation of historians and/or anthropologists rediscover the wheel (just watch: Discovery, History, Science, etc. channels) and redifine what is "factual." Biblical orthodoxy... hmm... I am careful not to indulge into orthodoxy as it could lead to extremist positions... which ultimately could lead to cultism. Paul tells us this: Because any chance comer has only to preach a Jesus other than the one we preached, or you have only to receive a spirit different from the one you received, or a gospel different from the one you accepted--and you put up with that only too willingly... These people are counterfeit apostles, dishonest workers disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. There is nothing astonishing in this; even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light... but he has answered me, 'My grace is enough for you: for power is at full stretch in weakness.'... Put yourselves to the test to make sure you are in the faith. Examine yourselves. Do you not recognise yourselves as people in whom Jesus Christ is present?--unless, that is, you fail the test... What we ask in our prayers is that you should be made perfect. (2 Corinthians 11:4 through 13:9) Test, everything (against Jesus' Word)! Keep what is good (what is of God)! And above all, humble yourself to the Holy Spirit, ask for guidance, and you will be set free! God Bless! Angel |
