Bible Question: What is the gospel of thomas |
Bible Answer: What is the gospel of Thomas? A: Gal.1:8-9 (NASB) But even if [we], or an [angel] from [heaven], should preach to you a [gospel] contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! v.9- As we have said before, so I say again now, if any [man] is preaching to you a [gospel] contrary to what you have received, he is to be [accursed]! Well I would like to try to give you a good insight into this controversial but a critical question. The Gospel of Thomas is found in the library of the 'Apocrypha' which means 'hidden' and 'concealed.' (Eerdman's Bible Dictionary) Now the term 'Apocrypha' originated from a word that Jerome gave to these writings as a 'warning' when he was asked by a pope or arch bishop of the Roman Catholic Religion to translate the Scriptures of the old text unto a literal modern Latin translation of the Scriptures to their present language. The Apocrypha first appeared and perhaps originated from the Greek translation of the OT which is called the Septuagint; it's abbreviation is (LXX)-for the 70 or 72 scholars that translated the Greek Septuagint from the original Hebrew manuscripts of the OT. The writings of the gospel of Thomas (to the unknown author's point of view) contains also a 'memorial account' of the life of Jesus like Matthew to John. The Bible never 'quotes' or cross-references the book of Thomas. The Jewish Scribes in their ancient days rejected these writings. Also along with the Jewish Canon of the OT rejects the Apocrypha. Even the puritans rejected the Apocrypha during the 1500-1650 a.d. period. The Apocrypha has historical and doctrinal errors. The original authors are 'unknown.' Archaeology has hardly been able to provide any evidence that it can cross-track the origins of these writings in it's past. Most importantly it is not inerrant, or infallible, or inspired because of it's errors and because it contrandicts the canonized Bible. Prophets and Apostles chosen 'directly'by God inspired Scripture under the supervision of the Holy Spirit. You need to begin a good research on the origin and contents of the Apocrypha. When you begin to do that, the info that you want concerning the infamous gospel of Thomas will begin to build up because the Apocrypha is the first to step of research for this type of information. Start reading books on theological reference, but it has be a heavy duty one, read the bible dictionaries, surf the net on this topic, and start compiling Scripture that speaks against false doctrine. (Biblequery.org is a good place to start) I hope that this helps you out, take care and may God give you the necessary and profound insights to defend the Scriptures! |
