Bible Question: When was the tithe first instituted? Since Abraham gave his tithe to Melchizedek before the Law was given, is tithing under the Law? |
Bible Answer: This subject has been discussed before ... King's Kid, Here is a repost of what I said ... Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek (Gen. 14:20; Heb. 7:6) and Jacob vowed unto the Lord to give a tenth (Gen. 28:22). These were given before the Law. There were three tithes 1) the general tithe paid to the Levites (Num 18:21), who even tithed to the preists (vs 26). 2) the sacred meal tithe (Deu 12:6,7,17-19; 14:22-27) 3) The tri-annual tithe to the poor (Deu 14:28,29; 26:12-15) "Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor 9:7). Many use "under the Law" as an excuse. However, I believe we are no longer under the penalty of the Law and the blood sacrifice is the only part we don't follow (Heb 9-10) Others have posted ... use Quick Search. Searcher |
