Bible Question: As a NT church, new Christian is it that a tithe equals 10 percent of your gross or net income? I am confused on this issue. Could you please provide me with some scripture to help me with the whole plan of tithes. |
Bible Answer: Hi Emt2001, I have heard that if you add up all of the tithes, offerings, and all that the Jews were required to give, that it totalled 42 percent of your income. Of course, part of that would be more comparable to our civil taxes. When Jesus said, "give to caeser what is caeser's, and to God what is God's", I can't imagine how much was being required of these people! In the New Testament, our giving is to be according to what we decide. 2 Cor 9:6 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. 2 Cor 9:7 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. "as he has purposed in his heart" OT tithing was always on the increase. Some will say that the taxes that come out of your check aren't part of your increase, and therefore, do not need to be tithed. Others will say that you pay taxes like you pay your light bill, and the total amount you make should be tithed. Both are right, because this is what each of them has decided for themself. I have decided that my household give a tenth of all income whatsoever, before taxes or anything, as a base offering. Then, as much as we can give above that, we try to do as often as possible, and as the Lord lays it on our hearts. I have chosen to tithe on the gross because it results in a larger amount, and I wish to make a larger offering. And to be honest, just to tithe is most months sacrificial giving, but I always come back to the widow's mite - she gove more because she gave of her substance. So I always encourage others, and endeavor to do myself - give to the Lord, and to those that He guides you to, more than you really can afford. Matt 6:19 "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. Matt 6:20 "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; Matt 6:21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
