Bible Answer: Hello yearegods, The NASB reads, "For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, so that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin." The word for jealous is, 'zeloi' (Gr.) It means "to burn with zeal", "to be heated or to boil with envy, hatred, anger", In a good sense, "to be zealous in the pursuit of good". When Paul writes, 'theou zeloi', it could more literally be said, "with a jealousy of God". Paul has an interest in the matter and treats the Corinthians as his bride. The Commentary Critical adds this: "The justification of his self-commendations lies in his zealous care lest they should fall from Christ, to whom he, as "the friend of the Bridgroom" (Jn. 3:29), has espoused them; in order to lead them back from the false apostles to Christ, he is obliged to boast as an apostle of Christ, in a way which, but for the motive, would be 'folly'. 'godly jealousy'- literally "jealousy of God" (cf. 1 Cor. 1:12- 'godly sincerity', literally, 'sincerity of God') A jealousy which has God's honor at heart (1 Ki. 19:10). I hope this helps, BradK |
