Subject: Suffering -- the Badge of His Militia |
Bible Note: "The highest consolation of all is when we endure persecution for the sake of righteousness. We must remember what honor the Lord has done us in giving us the badge of His militia. By persecution for righteousness I mean our suffering not only to defend the gospel but also to maintain any rightful cause. whether in defending God's truth against the lies of Satan, or else in sustaining the innocent against the wicked and in preventing wrong or injury being done them -- we must encounter the hatred, indignation of the world, to the peril of our honor, our possessions, or our life. "Let us not begrudge spending ourselves for God; Let us not think ourselves unhappy when with His own mouth he declares us happy. true it is that poverty valued for its own sake is misery. Likewise, exile, contempt, disgrace, prison; lastly death is the ultimate calamity. But when God breathes his favor, none there are of these things that do not turn out for us to be happiness, felicity. With Christ's witness, not with the false notion of our flesh, let us be content. "From this it will come about that at the apostles example we'll rejoice whenever and how much he will count us worthy to endure dishonor for his name. For if, being innocent and of good conscience, we are deprived of the wickedness of evil men of our possession, we are impoverished before men, but thereby towards God our true riches increase. If we are hounded and banished from our homeland, all the more are we received into the family of the Lord. If we are vexed and despised, all the more are we strengthened in our Lord to take our refuge there. If branded with disgrace and ignominy, all the more are we exalted in God's kingdom. If slain, entrance to the blessed life will open for us. Ashamed then should we not be to value less the things the Lord has highly prized that the delights of this world, which pass away like smoke? "Since Scripture then so comforts us in all disgrace and calamity we must endure for the defense of righteousness we are ungrateful indeed if we do not, with patience and cheerful hearts, bear these. Especially is this sort of cross appropriate above all others, for faithful Christians; By it Christ will to be 'Glorified in them,' As St. Peter says." --John Calvin |
