Bible Question: Is it scriptural to pray for the Anoiting of the Holy Spirit to flow increasingly? Thats not something the Holy Spirit will do without us doing something right? What is the definition of the anoiting- isn't it the ability given by God to do or acheive something to further his plan and purpose? |
Bible Answer: Hello jwsimmons, Here's my understanding on the matter. Harper's Bible Dictionary gives this definition (in part): "to cover the body or an object with oil or ointment. In the ancient Near East, it was a sign of luxury or festivity to anoint oneself with aromatic oils, usually after bathing. For this reason, mourners abstained from anointing (Isa. 61:3). Anointing was a means of investing someone with power, such as the anointment of King Solomon upon his ascent to the throne (1 Kings 1:39), perhaps to signify divine sanctification and approval." Much of our misunderstanding stems from what is falsely proclaimed by WOF types, etc. It is not some extra God-given "super-power". There is no direct Biblical command to "pray for the Anoiting(sic) of the Holy Spirit to flow increasingly" According to 1 Cor. 1:21, this is something already done for us (the believer) through Christ by God! As in the OT the priest was annointed once (Ex. 28:41), so in the NT the believer is also only annointed once! One does not get "more annointed" so-to-speak! However, what scripture does instruct us to do in the form of imperatives (commands) are found in Gal. 5:16 and Eph. 5:18: "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh."(NASB) "And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,"(NASB) I hope this helps, BradK |
