NASB | 1 Corinthians 7:39 ¶ A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 7:39 ¶ A wife is bound [to her husband by law] as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry whomever she wishes, only [provided that he too is] in the Lord. |
Bible Question: How did the amplified version decide that only in the Lord means provided that he too, as in the husband, is in the lord. Does this apply to whom is not married and not just widows. How do you determine what is biblical. Christian marring a non or someone who claims to be a believer and doesn't put the bible into practice in their lives. |
Bible Answer: From the admonishment of 2 Cor. 6:14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? As this verse says no believer should ever enter into any kind of meaningful relationship with a non believer. To me this speaks of marriage, business, deep friendships and binding agreements. As to your question of deceit where some one claims to be a believer and really isn't is a tough one and one that can be prevented had we done two things. Prayed for God's direction and prayed for discernment. However assuming that wasn't done and we find ourselves trapped in a relationship with a non believer we should do every thing we can to extract ourselves from that situation as fast as we can. Marriage however presents another problem it is for life unless the non believer wants out or breaks the covenant you made. 1 Cor. 7:12-16 But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her. [13] And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him. [14] For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy. [15] But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace. [16] For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? |
