Bible Question: Can you explain Icorth7vs36 |
Bible Answer: Thesis: Paul did not forbid anyone from getting married neither did he compel anyone to do so. The man in question has been viewed in various translations as the father or fiancé of the lady ripe for marriage. And as such two different meanings have been assigned to verse 36. Taking the man to be the father, the practice among the Hebrews and Christians is that a father is vested with the power to give or not give his daughter in marriage. If he is not giving, he can relegate her to perpetual life of singleness as a result of a vow he or the daughter had earlier taken. If the father had decided that his daughter be unmarried and later found that she had fixed her affections on a man and she is strongly wishing to marry, he may reason with the daughter's circumstances and change his stand. To Paul, this is not sinful. In such a case, she can marry her suitor and thus breach any earlier vow. I see this as grace we enjoy as a gift from God through Jesus Christ. The disgrace of the senior girl not married is thus wiped out with the suspicion derogatory to her reputation. But if one has determined to be a virgin, and stands to this determination, and is under no necessity to enter into a marriage, such person is at liberty, with parental consent, to pursue this purpose, she and her father do well in keeping her as a virgin. In short, he that gives in marriage does well; but he that keeps her single, if she can remain chaste in such a state, does what is better. It is worth of a mention that children should see themselves to be at the disposal of their parents, and not dispose of themselves in marriage as some do nowadays in our society. Yet, parents should respect their children's inclinations, in marriage and should not reckon that they have an uncontrollable power to do and dictate to them as they please. It is our duty as Christians not only to consider what is lawful, but in many cases, at least, what is fit to be done, before we do it. |
