Bible Question: In this verse and the next, Paul says that "all things belong to you". He seems to be refering to the Corinthian church. What does he mean by all things belong to the Corinthian church? |
Bible Answer: Scripture ... 1 Cor 3:1-23 (21-23) .............. Sir Pent, Very interesting views of the phrase "all things belong to you" ... I think we need to look at the whole chapter, and in particular the last three verses. 21 So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you, 22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23 and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God. There were division in the church, following Paul or Apollos (vs 4). Paul goes on to say they are just servants and God is behind the scenes, as director. Verse 9 says "you are God's field, God's building" ... God's temple in verse 16. Verses 10 to 15 says the material used in the building will be tested. Then he challanges the "wise" starting in verse 18. Then the latter half of verse 21 For all things belong to you has 4 parts (verse 22) 1. whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas (all leaders belong to all) 2. or the world 3. or life or death 4. or things present or things to come ... then we see "all things belong to you" It is because we belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God. |
