NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:9 So also you, unless you utter by the tongue speech that is clear, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:9 So it is with you, if you speak words [in an unknown tongue] that are not intelligible and clear, how will anyone understand what you are saying? You will be talking into the air [wasting your breath]! |
Bible Question (short): Is speaking in tongues a necessity ? |
Question (full): I know several christians who claim to be able to speak in tongues and be slain in the spirit. Is this truly a gift of the spirit we still have today, or was that just part of the pentecost described in Acts 2? I am a born again christian and belong to a baptist church where the spirit is felt however, everyone remains upright and worships in english. Ive attended a revival before and accepted Christ there but I never could get so moved to speak in tongues or fall over. The spirit always brings tears of joy and I know God loves and accepts me as his own. The question I guess is then is what do I tell those who think if you dont have this ability you are not saved? |
