Bible Question: 1 cor.14:34 Is Paul saying that women are not to be preachers of the word? Thanks, aloha Byron |
Bible Answer: Romans 16:3-5 Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus: Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles. Likewise greet the church that is in their house. Salute my wellbeloved Epaenetus, who is the firstfruits of Achaia unto Christ. Acts 18:2-4 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them. And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and persuaded the Jews and the Greeks. Acts 18:18 And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila; having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow. Acts 18:24-28 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace: For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publickly, shewing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ. 1 Corinthians 16:19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house. Aways Priscilla is mentioned with Aquila and no fair treatment of the text can be accomplished without giving equal credit to Priscilla for both the teaching of mighty Teachers such as Apollos and of pastoring the church in thier house. God uses Women to teach men. So Paul must have meant more than some are quoting him as saying when he said a woman must not teach a man or he would have rebuked Priscilla, but instead Paul treats Priscilla as though she is almost an equal with Paul. So what did Paul mean? The same thing we mean when we say a woman should not NAG a man. A woman should not try and mother her husband but encourage him as he takes spiritual leadership in the home as the strong man of the house. Instead of trying to criticize and teach him how to do it better she should be in submission to his leadership. If he prays too long, at devotions she should keep quiet about it and be thankful he is leading the family in prayer. Can a woman pastor, yes Priscilla was a pastor with her husband Aquila. By the way she ended up with a nickname.. 2 Timothy 4:19 Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus. :) Prisca She was a wonderful teacher in the Word. Romans 16:1-2 I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also. Let the "anti-women preacher doctrine monger" (basing there doctrine on that which they do not understand,) rave on all they wish, you have the complete word of God to trust in and when you collect all the new testament verses then you see that women were used and are used by God in the preaching of the Word and even in pastoring with their husbands with equal authority in the office of pastor. Just take a highlighter and go through the New Testament and Old Testament and notice how often God used women in the ministry both in prophesying and in preaching the Word. Yes there are more men but that is because of the authority issue. This authority issue is more spiritual then most understand. It has to do with battling the powers of darkness. I will post on that at another time. God Bless you in your study of His Word. |
