Bible Question: 1 cor.14:34 Is Paul saying that women are not to be preachers of the word? Thanks, aloha Byron |
Bible Answer: 1 Corinthians 14:29-40 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. Let all things be done decently and in order. Let me explain something that has been very badly handled by many preachers and teachers. The context has to do with Church Service. Or Publically speaking out for the edification of all. After dealing with improper use of tongues and telling them how to speak in tongues in order with the gift of interpretation so that people have understanding and are edified, he then tells the women not to be asking questions? What could this mean? The context makes it plain that the women were asking questions out loud out of order which would be a shameful way to act in church. This has nothing whatsoever to do with forbidding women to be preachers in order and in the right way. Should they be pastors, only if their husbands are pastors or if they are on the mission field and they are not married and there are no men to pastor. I read a theologian say that women did not speak in tongues because they were not allowed to speak in church. But all 120 in the upper room spake in tongues and the women were numbered among them. Phillips daughters prophesied and you don't prophesy in private, you prophesy to people. In the church there is neither male nor female as it relates to the callings of God, being under authority is not done by governments imposed by men either. Being under authority is something that both the man and the women do voluntarily as they seek out those that God leads them to to submit to that they bear witness have the spiritual leadership over them. This is not something anyone can tell you. Some man cannot come up and say "I am in authority over you" you will find yourself submitting voluntarily to those God wants to put in authority over you. For instance, the man or the woman will find themselves going to certain spiritually anointed and wise saints and asking advice and prayer, The spiritual man or woman that the saint goes to will in a spirit of humility point them to the word and to Christ and never act authoritative. This person without really thinking about it will be an authority in that saints life and it is all done by the Holy Spirit and not man or manmade church governments Today and since the 2nd or 3rd century we have had men making themselves to be church governments and trying to lord it over the flock but the true flock just blink at them and then trott off to listen to the true Shepherd. May God Bless you in your Study of His Word! |
