NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:15 What is the outcome then? I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the mind also; I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the mind also. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:15 Then what am I to do? I will pray with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will pray with the mind [using words I understand]; I will sing with the spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me] and I will sing with the mind [using words I understand]. |
Bible Question:
I'm quite confused about the issue of praying with our spirit. 1 Corinthians says, 'if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays.' Some churches take the view that praying with one's spirit necessarily means praying in a tongue. Is it biblical? I used to think that praying with our spirit doesn't necessarily mean praying in tongues. Can anyone show some insights regarding this? |
Bible Answer: Hi Kat bu, I would say that praying with our spirit doesn't necessarily mean praying in tongues. We should pray with our minds; then I think that we have the spirit of Christ. In regards to your title question and the capitalized Spirit: Jude 20 talks about praying in the Holy Spirit. Here we are to be building each other up in the faith, knowing the Spirit, and seeking the will of God. Ephesians 6:18 talks about praying at all times in the Spirit. Here again there is the concern for others and the will of God especially in understanding and proclaiming the gospel. 1) John 6:62, "It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life." 2) The five words of edification and interpretation that Paul speaks with his mind are words of "spirit". 1 Corinthians 14:2, "...but in his spirit he speaks mysteries." Let us worship God and declare that God is among us. Let us test the spirits. Let all things be done for edification. From the heart, Ray |
