NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue love, yet desire earnestly spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:1 Pursue [this] love [with eagerness, make it your goal], yet earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual gifts [to be used by believers for the benefit of the church], but especially that you may prophesy [to foretell the future, to speak a new message from God to the people]. |
Bible Question:
"Speaking in tongues"? Why do some Christian traditions promote the "speaking in tongues" practice, while others (like mine) scoff at it. The sceptic in me thinks they are merely making it up and forcing the noise out to conform with the actions of others around them. Thanks in advance for your contribution. |
Bible Answer: Simple. The churches that promote speaking in tongues do so because they believe this gift of the spirit is worthy to be received, see 1Cor14. I don't have this gift, but I know many in my church who speak in tongues as a prayer language. I find it beautiful and comforting to hear during group prayer. (My church offers once a month a "charismatic" service for those who wish a more intense encounter with the Holy Spirit.) Studies by linguists confirm that the sounds spoken conform to the patterns of true language, and in blind-trials they can readily identify efforts to fake it; the structure and rythms just aren't the same. Perhaps more importantly, we should be careful not to judge others, but rather receive the gift of discernment, i.e. the ability to see spiritual truth. |
