Bible Question: I want to know about love. I have heard about three kinds of love and I want to know where in the bible I can find out about them. If you can help me with references that would be great thanks! |
Bible Answer: "There are three basic Greek words for love used in the Bible. 1. Eros: I love you - I want you. As in "erotic" Eros is: a desire to possess and enjoy the object. Eros is egocentric, it's for my satisfaction, my self-enhancement. In the Bible: This word is used only once--in the Septuagint (Greek translation of the OT) (Prov. 4:6) But the concept is found in several places in the Bible. Proverbs 5:18-19 May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. 19 A loving doe, a graceful deer- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be captivated by her love. Song of Solomon 5:2-8 (He is speaking) I slept but my heart was awake. Listen! My lover is knocking: "Open to me, my sister, my darling, my dove, my flawless one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night." 3 I have taken off my robe- must I put it on again? I have washed my feet- must I soil them again? (Her Speaking) 4 My lover thrust his hand through the latch-opening; my heart began to pound for him. 5 I arose to open for my lover, and my hands dripped with myrrh, my fingers with flowing myrrh, on the handles of the lock. 6 I opened for my lover, but my lover had left; he was gone. My heart sank at his departure. I looked for him but did not find him. I called him but he did not answer. 7 The watchmen found me as they made their rounds in the city. They beat me, they bruised me; they took away my cloak, those watchmen of the walls. 8 O daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you- if you find my lover, what will you tell him? Tell him I am faint with love. 2. Philia: I love you - I like (being with) you As in "Philadelphia" Philia is called "brotherly love". Philia love is conditional because it expects certain conditions to be met. I love you if… if you're good to me. If you meet my expectations. Or I love you because you're attractive. 3. Agape: - I love you regardless of who or what your are. Agape is unconditional. No if's, no "when's", no "because." Agape is the word used for love in the New Testament about 90 percent of the time. Many have said agape is biblical love. This is the love God has for us, the love we should have for God, the love we should have for our neighbor the love a husband and wife should have for each other even the love we should have for our enemies Agape love is the love that sent Jesus to the cross to pay the debt, penalty for sinners Rom. 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Agape is the word for love used in 1 Corinthians 13 And now I will show you the most excellent way. 13 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. 8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. 12 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. Some translations of the Bible say, love does not insist on its own way. This pretty much sums it all. That is the major difference between God's version of love and the world's. The world says, I will love you as long as it works well for me. Thats philia and it works great as long as things are going well. But agape love is putting the other's needs ahead of your own." |
