NASB | 1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 13:1 ¶ If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love [for others growing out of God's love for me], then I have become only a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal [just an annoying distraction]. |
Bible Question: Believers of the Pentecostal persuasion use other tongues as the evidence of the Holy Spirit indwelling. Is the speaking with other tongues in this verse in reference to gifts of the Spirit? |
Bible Answer: We must be careful not to make tongues out of a badge or doctrine for recognizing who is saved or unsaved or those who are more or less spiritual. True evidence of christian character is shown through the fruits of the spirit. Notice tongues is NOT listed. Matt 7:16 "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? 2 Matt 7:20 "So then, you will know them by their fruits. Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 48 Eph 5:9 (for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), |
