Subject: The Work of the Spirit |
Bible Note: Revelation 1:4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; (KJV) Revelation 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Re 3:1 And unto the angel of the church in Sardis write; These things saith he that hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars; I know thy works, that thou hast a name that thou livest, and art dead. These verses say some rather strange things, especially about the Holy Spirit. We know from a variety of scriptures that God is Triune – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We read in John 3:34 “For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.” The speaks of a singular “Spirit”, and so throughout scripture, with the exception of four times in Revelation. This particularly interesting in light of the prophecy of Isaiah: Isaiah 11:1-2 “There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” Wisdom Understanding Counsel Might Knowledge Fear I understand this to be speaking of the various facets of ministry which Jesus was given to do, each individually empowered by the Holy Spirit. In the synagogue, Jesus read Isaiah 61, as He began His ministry, stopping just before reading “the day of vengeance”, because He was not here to judge, but to save. And so here in Isaiah 11, six characturistics or empowerments are given, as Isaiah prophesies of the first coming of the Messiah, to save. The seventh is found in Isaiah 4, as he prophesies of the coming of the Lord in judgement: Isaiah 4:3-4 “And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written among the living in Jerusalem: When the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of burning.” Looking at these attributes or characturistics, we see that these facets of ministry build upon each other: Knowledge is having the facts of a matter or situation. Understanding is correctly interpreting the facts, and knowing what they mean. Wisdom is knowing what to do with this information. Counsel is being able to instruct, advise, and direct others. Might is the ability to act. Fear is the fear of God, living in the presence of the Living God. Judgement and Burning has been reserved by Jesus for Himself. Revelation 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns (complete power) and seven eyes (complete knowledge), which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. In this final passage in Revelation of the “seven Spirits of God”, we are told they are “sent forth into all the earth.” This leads us directly to the Old Testament: 2 Chronicles 16:9 “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect (complete, full) toward him.” So the Holy Spirit is sent into the earth, to show Himself strong for those whose heart is fully towards Him. In 2 Chronicles, the context was of waging war with Judah’s enemies. how does this apply in our lives? |
