Bible Question:
I have looked and tried to find the answer in the bible and the only thing i can even find on it is in: 1 Corinthians 14 Speaking in tongues: 1) Can any one who lives by Gods will and not their own speak in tongue? 2) The Christians who truly do live for God and Jesus only, can they receive the gift of speaking in tongues, or are you born with that gift? 3)What exactly does Hebrews talk about? When you can answer me please e-mail me at: TMiller1674@msn.com. Thank You, so much for taking the time to read my question. Please try to get back to me a.s.a.p., because i have tried to search and i can find nothing and i have asked so many people that are of Gods children and have not received any answers. Thank You So Much, and God Bless You All, Theresa Miller; age:16 |
Bible Answer: Hi, In 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 and 1 Corinthians 12:28-30, "speaking various kinds of tongues" (NRSV) or "speaking in different kinds of tongues" (NIV) or "speak in unknown languages" (NLT) is listed as a spiritual gift. Spiritual gifts are given to believers (Christians) by God. They are to serve God and help the body of believers. Not everyone has the same gift, but all our gifts work together just like the different parts of a human body (ear, mouth, finger, toes, heart) all work together for 1 purpose. You don't choose what gift you get, God does. I think you might have different gifts at different times. Also, I think its ok to desire a certain gift, but that doesn't mean you can choose what gift you get. The important part is to love God and love your neighbour. If you are open to serving God, then you will probably end up using your spiritual gift, whatever it is. Another place in the bible that talks about spiritual gifts is Romans 12:6-8 and Ephesians 4:11-13. I'm not sure if my answer is helpful at all. You should pray to God about your questions too. In Acts 2 you can read about Christians speaking in many tongues. As far as I know, tongues means languages, so this is talking about speaking in many different languages. "Tongues" itself is not a language, but rather this means that what someone is saying comes out sounding like a different language, one that they have never studied, but that someone else can understand. You asked if you are born with that gift. You are not born with spiritual gifts, but you get them once you become a believer. God bless. With love, Jacqueline |
