AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one [Holy] Spirit we were all baptized into one body, [spiritually transformed--united together] whether Jews or Greeks (Gentiles), slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit [since the same Holy Spirit fills each life]. Bible Question:
Reference #132878 Hi Tim, What version were you quoting for 1 Corinthians 12:13? I am wondering about "and we were all given the one Spirit to drink". What are we to drink? King James, "and have been all made to drink into one Spirit". NKJ, "and have all been made to drink into [NU omits into] one Spirit." NASB, "and we were made to drink of one Spirit." Bible Answer: Greetings Ray! Sorry about that! I was quoting from the NIV. Of the translations you listed, I would go with the NASB's traslation. There is no 'into' in the Greek text. It literally says, "...and all one Spirit we were given to drink." In this case, 'drink' most likely refers to 'take part in' or 'to participate in'. This is the sense in which this verb is used in Rev. 14:8, "A second angel followed and said, 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.'" Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
