Bible Question:
Dear Ed, please don't take my post as "gotcha!". My intention is to take this opportunity try to get you to see how it feels to have beloved doctrines suppressed and your own motives impugned by brothers who hold opposing pre-suppositions. The Pentecostal doctrine of tongues has been discussed very often on the forum. It could easily be said to reflect a pushing of a denominational bias. Don't get me wrong Ed, I respect your right to engage in whatever aspect of Scripture which you believe will glorify God and lead to knowing God as He has revealed Himself to in the Bible. What I want to know is this; Why was my topic on election subject to censure, yet your topic is not subject to the same? ID# 114949 "John The debate you seem bent on perpetuating has been ongoing for 500 years. Minds greater than ours have not been able to reconcile various scriptures on the subject to the satisfaction of both sides. So what is the point? Are we so prideful to think we have the answer? This topic has been discussed and re-discussed on this forum with no results other than anger and hurt feelings. Many a good contributor has left the forum over what has taken place in the name of this debate. In the name of Christian unity I ask you and all involved to refrain from further debate on this subject. EdB Please Ed, tell how the discussion of tongues is within the guidelines, but election is a violation of the same. In hope of a resolution, John |
Bible Answer: A defense of "reformed" forum members......................... Let me begin by a few disclaimers: I do not agree with "reformed" theology, but rather fall into the Arminianist theological camp. I do not support needless forum dissention, but rather accept that it is healthy to have honest discussion from varying perspectives. I do not desire for this to discussion to be a stumbling block for those on the forum who are less mature, which is why I am posting it in this restricted thread. I do not mean to pick on the respected forum members (Morant61, Ray, Emmaus, and Hank) mentioned in this post. I am only trying to point out some observations purely as examples. Now to the defense: There seems to be 3 main criticisms of certain "reformed" members of our forum. 1 - The person is too argumentative 2 - The person is posting too much on the same subject 3 - The person is posting on a subject that is denominationally divisive The first point is the easiest. Whether a person is too argumentative is a very subjective thing. It often appears very differently depending on whether we agree with the person or not. I think that it is probably possible to make a case that anyone who has posted more than 200 times on this forum has been too argumentative at times. This is not a good reason to ban a person. The second point is also relatively easy. Each forum member has their own personal interest in certain aspects of Christianity and Bible Study. They naturally tend to focus on these areas in their posts. For instance, Morant61 has over 500 posts containing a derivative of the word "Greek". This is not a bad thing. It merely means that he has a strong interest in the original languages that the Bible was written in. Ray has over 600 posts containing a derivative of the word "Capital". This is also not a bad thing. It merely reflects his own personal study on which words in the Bible should be capitalized out of reverence to God. A large number of posts, or even a large percentage of a forum member's posts (30 percent in Ray's case), should not be grounds for kicking someone off the forum. The last point is the hardest to defend, due to the fact that the Forum clearly states a rule banning denominationally divisive subjects. There are certain members of this forum who believe one way on a particular doctrine of Christianity and others who fall in the opposing camp. The problem is that this forum seems to be inconsistent in its behavior towards the inevitable conflicts that therefore arise. Some topics that are denominationally divisive are allowed. For instance, Emmaus has posted almost 500 times containing a derivative of the word "Catholic". There is a lot of dissention between Catholics and Protestants, yet no one criticizes Emmaus. And if any topic has caused discord on the forum it would be "Cain's wife". Hank has posted almost 100 times with a derivitive of Cain, which has become his personal running joke. Yet although almost none of these posts contain any scripture, no one criticizes Hank. Therefore, it seems that the only denominationally divisive topic that is banned from discussion is that of the reformed perspective. This doesn't seem to be fair basis for kicking a forum member out either. |
