Bible Question: Shalom, brothers and sisters. according to 1Cor.11:4, does that include when a bible study class is not in church? Where I work, we have a bible class everyday. Some of the men wear hats during the class. Is that wrong? God bless, michael |
Bible Answer: Hi, Michael... Given the context, this practice would be related to worship in a public rather than private venue. In the ancient Greek culture -- and that would, of course, apply to Corinth -- men worshiped with uncovered heads. Jewish men, however, wore -- and in some cases still do -- a Talit as a sign of humility before God. In the Christian West this practice found expression everywhere. Propriety required the removal of the hat when a man entered a church, and the wearing of a yamika when a man entered a synagogue. I deem these practices to be largely cultural -- although I've not spent a great deal of time studying the theological implications. I am a son of Israel, converted to Christianity. Nevertheless, I'd be loathe to wear a hat while involved in the study of the Word with my Christian brothers, to the same degree that I'd be loathe to fail to wear a yamika when I go to synagogue. Of course, some of those feelings have to do with my background and my age. I have the liberty in Christ to adopt the contrary course. However, Christian charity would, it seems to me, engender a desire to show proper respect for the customs of those around me (Romans 15). In Him, Doc |
